CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast
Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches." He told them still another parable:

"The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough."
Matthew 13:31-33
In light of this month's Scripture our Prayer is:
God of intimate love and jealous power, the image of the loincloth is so personal. And yet You use practical images to show us how closely and intimately You cling to us. Yet why do we miss You? Not look at You? Are so unaware? You have defined us as Your beloved daughters and sons, and yet we create false selves of our fears, hopes, and hurts -- and take pride in what is not our greatest blessing. And so we rot -- our crazy pride destroys us and leads us to emptiness and oppression. Please help us to understand the images which proclaim Your loving presence -- like the mustard seed which seems so insignificant and yet blooms or the yeast which raises the whole loaf to new heights of our deepest truth. Today, as we walk through life, make us more attentive to the mystery lain hidden in creation. Save us from our destructive selves, Lord Jesus.
Thank you and May God Bless, Chaplain Walter Choate
